I was prepared to accept failure on my shoelessness bill. But I wasn't expecting it to crash quite so hard. It got the fewest yes votes of all the initiatives on the ballot: 22%. It also got a significant number of no-opinion votes, and I think about 65 to 70% no votes. I was really surprised. I never thought such a hippie place as Grinnell would be so unprogressive on an issue like barefooting. Yesterday, I did an interview with a guy from KDIC, the college's radio station, and I think I pinpointed the problem: everyone here is probably only really progressive on the big, world issues, and doesn't really give a whole lot of thought to different viewpoints on small issues like barefooting. Yes, there are more important issues, but as long as you're voting, why not give barefooting a yes?
-I applied to be a GOOP leader next year. A few days later, I got a letter back saying that they had so many very qualified and experienced applicants that they had to make some very difficult cuts and we'll let you know if anything opens. I told them to please, please let me know. Nothing has opened. This summer, I'll apply to some sort of camp. Maybe Manito-wish.
-I ordered an album in the mail and got it. It's really good: The Sunset Tree. It's by The Mountain Goats, who came here before winter break, and I saw them in concert then. I like it a bunch, especially "Dilaudid".
-I made that snow sculpture. Here is a picture.
Here is a video. It shows me making it.

So sorry to hear that "discalzedeness" (I know that's NOT the word but I do forget the actual word, though I do remember that "defenestrate" means "to exit through a window") was not accepted with zeal by the Pioneers. However, it may be that you picked a difficult time for it, and the Obamabots, Clintonistas, and McCainanites just didn't pay attention amidst their own internal warfare. Seems they fight with their shoes on and armed.
Well I FOR ONE hope you can someday eat at the cafeteria with your shoes off, but don't count on it. I guess you're finding out that no matter where you go to school, the dual hounds of apathy and entropy stalk viciously. As they prowl and devour, you may consider wearing sandals, at least inside, for now.
I love you and your snowman rawks!

Think of it this way - under your sock or shoe or both you have a bare foot. It is all a matter of perspective. It is true that it is always sunny in the daytime if you are at the right altitude. On the otherhand I do not really care to eat my cheesy lasagna while looking at a bare foot with a 1/4 of an inch of toe jam under the nail - not your toe or mine but the other persons. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. GPa. P.S. I'm surprised that 22 % like toe jam.
Thing is, wearing flip-flops is completely within the rules, and those cover basically nothing.
Voter apathy strikes again. Bunch of damn footwear conformists! Even in G-town the moral majority shows up. Maybe you should stage a foot-in, and call the local media.....wait, you are the local media......hmmmmmmmmm.........

When the rules say you "must wear shoes" does it say where you must wear them, i.e., head, ears, hands, etc. Just a thought. G.Pa,
So you like snow. We have 15" on the ground today in Oxford. I think I will box it and send it to you. G.Pa.
Wow, that's pretty good. We've had a lot of good storms, but none of them were quite that big. Consistency, though: we've had storms like twice a week since December. That's overstated, but not drastically. I'm happy with the winter I got. Yours is good too, but more in a "flash in the pan" way.
You are right - it was a flash in the pan. Our largest snowstorm since 1978 (as stated by a local meteorologist). That was 30 years ago. Anyway I fired up the snowblower and sent the white stuff to the sky ( a 30 mph wind from the north helped). Hope all is well in Grinnell. G.Pa.
I wonder if there will still be any when I get back. I haven't done any sledding. There was a tubing trip, but I was too busy at the time to do it.
It is supposed to be cold for a while. When do you come back. G.Pa
After next week.
There won't be any snow left. It is supposed to be in the 60's by Thursday.
